Taking Back Your Attention

Your attention is one of your most Valuable Assets and you’ve been giving it away to everyone excepted you.

In today’s world, your attention is one of your most precious resources—and, it’s constantly being hunted by everyone around you, because they understand its value. From the endless news cycles to the buzzing of your phone, the aggressive marketing tactics, the ads that follow you everywhere, and the never-ending stream of podcasts and emails, the noise is inescapable. It’s overwhelming, isn’t it? It’s not just the external noise; it’s how it clouds your mind, makes you feel disconnected, and drowns out your own thoughts.

We’re living in a world where everyone is trying to grab your attention by any means necessary, and if you don’t protect this asset, you risk living your entire life in a bubble, disconnected from your true desires, your purpose, and the things that matter most to you.

But here’s the truth: You can reclaim it.

In the Reflective Circle journaling membership, May is all about Focus. It’s about taking that intangible asset—your attention—and using it to your advantage. This month, instead of just setting goals like you always do, let’s try something different. Let’s focus on what we want to produce this month. What do you want to see happen in May? Imagine yourself like an archer, poised, with the arrow and bow pointing in the right direction. Pull back, release, and stay true to your aim.

You may have heard all the usual advice on goal-setting: block out your main goals, surround them with smaller goals to support them, and stay on track. But I want you to think of it differently this time. How about instead of a rigid, set goal, we center our energy on what we want to produce this month? This is your opportunity to bring your vision into the world.

As you set your intentions for the month, prepare yourself for the usual obstacles that arise—the distractions, the excuses, the things that hold you back from moving forward. We all have them. If procrastination is your thing, I recommend revisiting a blog post I wrote titled “Every Day Someone Your Age is Dying.” It’s a reminder that time is not to be wasted, that there’s no more waiting, no more postponing.

So how do we get caught in procrastination? Maybe it’s scrolling aimlessly through your phone, binge-watching shows, or losing yourself in hours of conversation that goes nowhere. For me, it used to be watching drama shows—so easy to get lost in the plot, avoiding my own life.

Here’s what I did to take control: I set a boundary with TV shows. No more than 1 hour on working days and 3 hours a day of screen time on weekends. And every day, I remind myself that time is precious. I read that blog post again, letting it ground me. I write down my production goals for the month, keeping them front and center in my mind. I say them out loud before bed. It’s a constant battle, yes, but it’s one worth fighting.

And here’s something that I am determined to make happen in May: finishing the construction of our two-bedroom apartment and securing a tenant by the end of the month. I’ve already mapped out the plan for that extra income, and I keep it front of mind as a reminder of why this matters. It’s not just about the apartment. It’s about creating something for our family, something that will bring us closer to our dreams.

So, my dear friend, how about you? What do you want to produce this month? What are you setting your sights on? Let this be a time to focus, not just on the what, but on the why—and guard your attention fiercely. What will you release into the world this May?

With all my heart,

Salima
